Uzbekistan accepts Afghan ambassador in win for Taliban govt
Uzbekistan has accepted an ambassador from Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities, marking a rare diplomatic success for the Kabul government, which remains largely isolated internationally.
This appointment is the third of its kind since the Taliban assumed power in 2021, following similar appointments in China and the United Arab Emirates.
Abdul Ghafar Bahr, the new diplomat to Uzbekistan had also previously served as a judicial official in Kandahar and Kabul. During the ceremony where his credential were presented, Bahr emphasised on strengthing ties and further expressed hope for future progress.

Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov noted the shared history and mutual interests between the two countries, which would foster cooperation in various fields.
On the same day, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum signed a 10-year agreement valued at around $1 billion with an Uzbek company for the exploration and extraction of natural gas in northern Afghanistan.
Since the Taliban took power in 2021, no foreign country has officially recognized their government. However, they continue to seek diplomatic and economic ties with neighboring countries.
