The US State Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Chinese research center and other companies claiming they are involved in providing supplies to Pakistan for its ballistic missile programme.

Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the department, indicated that the Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry had partnered with Pakistan to obtain equipment for testing rocket motors used in the Shaheen-3 and Ababeel missile systems, and possibly for even larger systems.

The sanctions also targeted China-based firms Hubei Huachangda Intelligent Equipment Co, Universal Enterprise, and Xi’an Longde Technology Development Co, along with Pakistan-based Innovative Equipment and a Chinese individual, for their roles in supplying prohibited missile technology.

Miller stated that these actions highlight the US commitment to countering proliferation and related procurement activities wherever they occur.

The embassies of China and Pakistan in Washington have not yet responded to requests for comment.
