ASP Shehrbano denies claims of Lahore college student’s ‘rape,’ states ‘There’s No Victim’
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shehrbano Naqvi has confirmed that the girl at the center of recent allegations was hospitalized ten days prior to the incident being reported. She stated that the police possess the girl’s medical records.
The girl’s family has denied any claims of “rape,” asserting that she fell at home. Punjab police have dismissed the allegations regarding the supposed rape of a private college student, stating that there is “no victim” associated with the claims that led to violent protests in Lahore the previous day.
A group of students gathered outside a private college on Monday in response to the viral reports of the alleged rape of a female student . The protests were stopped but are set to resume today.
The police have arrested a security guard from the college, accused of raping the student, however, the suspect has denied the accusations. The police have initiated the investigation but was not been able to find evidence to support the claims.
In an interview with a private channel, ASP Shehrbano explained that the girl involved was hospitalized 10 days prior to the date of the alleged incident. “We have her medical reports and hospital records, which confirm her condition and the details surrounding her fall at home as she was getting ready for school,” she stated.
Naqvi clarified that there are two girls at the college with the same name; one is perfectly fine, while the other is the hospitalized girl. She urged anyone who believes they have a victim to come forward, stressing that the police are willing to file an FIR if evidence is presented.
“Why would we avoid registering a case?” she asked.
The ASP also mentioned that the school administration was aware that the girl fell at home and was cooperating with the police. “This is why they are being managed,” she added.
The police have called on students spreading ‘false’ messages to provide video or other evidence of a sexual assault, as they currently lack proof of such an incident.
When questioned about claims that CCTV footage of the event had been deleted, she stated that the police have no information regarding that matter.
Amid the protests, the girl’s family stepped forward to reject the claims of rape. In a video message with ASP Naqvi, the girl’s father and uncle, with their faces concealed, asserted that “there has been no sexual assault” against their daughter.
“We are astonished by the videos of the ongoing protests on social media,” the girl’s uncle stated, adding that she is receiving treatment in a hospital’s ICU for a back injury sustained from a fall at their home. He claimed the protests were being conducted based on false information.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has meanwhile, formed a high-level committee to investigate the allegations of sexual assault against the student.
