As a critical step towards implementing economic reforms in the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday emphasized the importance of digitizing the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

During a meeting to discuss FBR issues, the Prime Minister was told that the tax authority had formed an in-house “transformative plan” to enhancing its services.

This plan purpose is to enhance effective use of technology, rewarding efficient officers to increase tax collection, and strengthening enforcement of tax laws.

This initiative was created based on the Prime Minister’s directives and insights from economic and technological experts, following an analysis of tax receipts over the past 25 years, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

The initiative, which was formulated by FBR officials and specialists in 40 days, aims to support “honest taxpayers” and “ensure tax collection without impeding economic development.”

The meeting was told that the initiative would be implemented after consultation with “good taxpayers”.

In the initial phase, proficient officers will be stationed in Karachi, the major taxpayer hub responsible for 32 percent of total receipts, with additional support from auditors and experts.

The plan also includes performance rewards for officers and a professional degree from top universities following their standard and specialized training programs.

The Prime Minister titled FBR as backbone of country economy and appreciated the FBR’s transformation plan, noting that increased tax revenue would enhance service delivery and the social sector.

Furthermore, he instructed the FBR to collaborate closely with government departments and key taxpayers while calling for independent audits of FBR projects to combat smuggling.
