‘It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive’ wins news & doc Emmy despite calls for its disqualification
“It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive”, news story from Palestinian journalist/activist/filmmaker Bisan Owda which had sparked controversy after earning a News and Documentary Emmy nomination earlier this year, won the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story, Short Form award at the News Emmys on Wednesday.
The story, which previously won a Peabody Award, documents Owda’s experiences and her family’s struggles as they navigate the conflict in Gaza.
Earlier in August, Creative Community for Peace (CCP) called for the cancellation of Owda’s nomination, citing alleged connections between Owda and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
Despite these claims, the News Emmys upheld Bisan Owda’s nomination.
The 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmys, held in New York City, also recognized several other news stories.
According to Variety, CNN received awards for Outstanding Breaking News Coverage and Outstanding Continuing News Coverage, Short Form for various reports on the situation in Israel.
ABC News Live won Outstanding Live Interview, Short Form for its coverage of an interview with an Israeli leader.
