NA adopts resolution to form committee amidst PTI arrests
On Wednesday, both the government and opposition reached an agreed to form a 16-member committee to address parliamentary issues following the arrests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members within the Parliament House.
The resolution, presented by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, proposed the creation of a parliamentary committee with members from both the ruling party and opposition in the National Assembly (MNAs). This committee will be assigned with discussing, analyzing, and offering solutions for matters affecting the parliamentary process and its effective operation.
This move comes as Speaker Ayaz Sadiq led the lower house’s session amidst increased political tension following the arrest of several PTI members for allegedly breaching the new Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024, related to a PTI rally in Islamabad on Sunday.
Earlier today, the Speaker Ayaz Sadiq had also suspended the House’s Sergeant at Arms and four other security personnel due to the reported arrests of lawmakers by Islamabad police (IP) and unidentified personnal within the National Assembly’s premises.
During the NA session, he referred to PTI founder Imran Khan’s time as Prime Minister and criticized the previous Speaker Asad Qaiser’s refusal to issue production orders for opposition members.
Sadiq vowed to investigate the situation thoroughly and emphasized his commitment to ensure the honour of Parliament. He also invited PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar to meet with him after the session to discuss the current fiasco.
