England beat Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test match played at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Spinner Jack Leach took four crucial wickets, helping England claim a comprehensive victory in the first Test in Multan, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

This defeat was a significant setback for Pakistan, as despite scoring 500+ runs in their first innings they made history by becoming the first team in Test cricket to lose by an innings.

This loss extends Pakistan losing streak to six consecutive Test matches and marking their seventh defeat in the last nine home games.

Since 2022, Pakistan’s home record has been dire, with no wins, six losses, and four draws in 10 matches, leaving them with a win percentage of 0%.

On Day 5, England’s bowlers quickly dismissed Pakistan’s remaining four batters, bowling them out for 200 and securing the win. Leach led the charge, taking 4-30, and breaking Pakistan’s key partnership when he dismissed Salman Agha, who had fought hard for his 63.

Pakistan had appeared on the brink of defeat a day earlier, with Salman and Aamer Jamal fighting back from 82-6 to see out the day. However, England’s patience paid off, as Leach struck early on Day 5 to remove Salman and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Naseem Shah was later stumped for six, bringing Pakistan’s innings to a close, with Abrar Ahmed unable to bat due to illness.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood now faces the pressure of six consecutive losses since his appointment last year, including defeats in Australia and at home against Bangladesh. Pakistan has gone 11 Tests without a home victory, their last win coming against South Africa in February 2021.

The second Test is to be held at the same venue on Tuesday, whereas the third Test is scheduled for October 24 in Rawalpindi.
