Biden calls for two-state solution, ceasefire at UNGA
US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to a two-state solution in his final address to the 79th United Nations General Assembly, reiterating that a sovereign, peaceful Palestinian state is the only way to achieve permanent peace in thne region.
“Full-scale war is in no one’s interest,” Biden said. He urged further diplomatic engagement against the worsening tide of violence.
His statement comes after Israel launched fresh military action inside Lebanon, heightening the risk of wider regional conflict.
Remembering diplomatic efforts by his administration in what was likely his last UNGA appearance, Biden dove deep into the ongoing conflicts of the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan.
Amid criticism that his administration has given all-out support to Israel, Biden called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza amid an upsurge of violence that has caused a heavy toll. Biden called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza while expressing deep concern for “innocent civilians”, describing their suffering as “hell.”
Biden criticized Russia’s Ukraine-invasion stating it has failed to achieve it’s “essential objective” of destroying Ukraine, as “Ukraine is still free.” He called the world community to continue its support for Ukraine”until the battle is won.”
Biden highlighted his administration foreign policy achievements, including support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, the management of US-China relations, and upholding the UN Charter.
He spoke about humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan, and global principles with respect to artificial intelligence.
Noting his decision not to stand for re-election, President Biden invited a new generation of leadership to come forward and said it was time for leaders to put their countries above political ambition. “Some things are more important than staying in power,” he added.
