Saba Qamar has become UNICEF first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan on Friday. This announcement was made on the International Day of the Girl Child, a day focused on advocating for girls’ rights and recognizing the distinct challenges they face worldwide.

In a press release, Qamar expressed, “It’s a privilege to join UNICEF. I will advocate for our shared mission of ensuring every child’s rights are upheld, no matter where I am. During my recent travels, I witnessed both the obstacles that children and women face in this country and the significant impact of UNICEF’s committed efforts. I vow to contribute to the well-being of Pakistan’s children and youth, enabling them to dream and pursue those dreams.”

As the National Ambassador for UNICEF Pakistan, the star will leverage her platform to raise awareness about children’s rights and the issues affecting youth, including child marriage, mental health, educational disparities, gender equality, climate change, and the consequences of violence, exploitation, and child poverty.

Pakistan ranks sixth globally with 19 million child brides. Over 50 percent of girls become pregnant before turning 18, a situation that poses severe risks to both the mother and child.

UNICEF warns that without immediate and proper actions, it could take decades to eradicate child marriage in Pakistan . A comprehensive societal approach is crucial to combat this detrimental practice and safeguard both current and future generations of young girls, who represent one of the country’s most significant untapped resources.

“We are thrilled to welcome Saba to UNICEF,” said Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan. “Ms. Qamar is a courageous and influential advocate for the rights of women and girls. We eagerly anticipate working closely with her to spotlight the critical challenges children in Pakistan face today and to enhance our efforts to help every child realize their full potential.”

On Thursday, Saba Qamar shared photos from her travels where she interacted with girls in an undisclosed area. In her post, she wrote, “I met some incredible individuals this week and had amazing experiences. I have so many stories to tell! More updates coming soon!”
